Student Leadership
Leadership for Everyone
At Drayton Manor High School, we believe that leadership is not about status or title. It is about service, responsibility and making a positive contribution to the lives of others.
Rooted in our values of Ambition, Character and Civic Virtue, our student leadership programme provides every student with opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, communication and teamwork skills while contributing meaningfully to school life. We believe that every student has the potential to lead, and our leadership structures are designed to ensure that all students can make their voice heard and their talents recognised. Through a wide range of opportunities, students learn that leadership is about serving a community, taking responsibility and bringing about positive change.
A Progressive Leadership Journey
Student leadership at Drayton Manor is designed as a journey rather than a single role or position.
From Year 7 onwards, students are encouraged to take on responsibilities, represent their peers and contribute to the wider life of the school. As students progress through the school, they can access increasingly significant leadership opportunities, developing the skills and experience needed to lead with confidence and integrity. This progressive approach ensures that leadership is accessible to all and allows students to pursue opportunities that reflect their interests, strengths and aspirations.
School Leadership
School Leadership provides students with opportunities to represent their peers, contribute to decision-making and play an active role in shaping school life. Students begin by serving as Tutor Representatives, acting as the voice of their tutor groups and gathering the views, ideas and feedback of their peers. Tutor Representatives play an important role in ensuring that all students have a voice in the life of the school and can contribute to discussions about their school experience.
Tutor Representatives are then able to apply for positions on the School Council. Following an application and selection process, two students from each year group are appointed by the Sixth Form Student Leadership Team to serve on the School Council. These students work closely with staff and fellow student leaders to discuss school priorities, contribute ideas and help drive improvements across the school community.
Older students may also apply for positions within the Senior Student Leadership Team. These students act as ambassadors for the school, leading initiatives, supporting major school events, representing the student body and working alongside staff to strengthen the culture and ethos of the school.
Through these opportunities, students develop leadership, communication and decision-making skills while learning how to represent others effectively and contribute positively to school life.
House Leadership
House Leadership provides opportunities for students to develop leadership through participation, competition, service and community engagement. Students can begin developing their leadership skills through involvement in House activities and events. During Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to stand for election as Deputy Head of House. Deputy Heads of House work closely with staff and student leaders to promote House participation, support competitions and events, and encourage students to play an active role in House life.
In the Sixth Form, students may apply to become Head of House. Heads of House provide strategic leadership for their House, leading teams of student leaders, coordinating events, supporting charitable initiatives and promoting House identity across the school. They play a vital role in strengthening House spirit and fostering a sense of belonging among students.
Through these opportunities, students develop leadership, organisation and teamwork skills while helping to strengthen the sense of community that lies at the heart of the House System.
Academic Leadership
Academic Leadership enables students to champion learning, promote intellectual curiosity and contribute to the academic life of the school.
Students can develop leadership within their favourite subjects through a structured programme of increasing responsibility. Beginning as Subject Representatives, students have opportunities to promote their subjects, gather student voice and support departmental activities. As their experience and leadership develop, they may progress to become Subject Ambassadors and, ultimately, Subject Presidents, taking a leading role in supporting enrichment opportunities, fostering enthusiasm for their subject and helping departments promote a culture of academic excellence.
Alongside this, students who demonstrate strong learning habits and a commitment to scholarship can become Learning Leads. These students help promote effective learning behaviours and support whole-school initiatives that encourage academic success. Experienced student leaders may then progress to the role of Senior Learning Leads, working with staff and fellow students to promote a culture of ambition, resilience and high achievement across the school.
Students can also contribute through library leadership opportunities, helping to promote reading, support library events, recommend resources and encourage a culture of literacy across the school. Through these opportunities, students play an important role in fostering a lifelong love of reading and learning within the school community.
Through all of these pathways, students develop confidence, communication and leadership skills while helping to create an environment where learning is valued, curiosity is encouraged and academic excellence can flourish.
Pastoral Leadership
Pastoral Leadership focuses on supporting wellbeing, inclusion and personal development across the school community.
Students can serve as Wellbeing Ambassadors, helping to promote positive mental health, inclusion and belonging throughout the school. Working alongside staff, they contribute to campaigns, events and initiatives that encourage students to look after themselves and support one another.
As they develop their experience and leadership skills, students may take on greater responsibility in coordinating activities, supporting awareness campaigns and helping to shape the school's wellbeing provision. Sixth Form students may be appointed as Senior Wellbeing Ambassadors, leading teams of student ambassadors and working closely with staff to promote a positive, supportive and inclusive environment for all members of the school community.
Through these opportunities, students develop empathy, communication and leadership skills while helping to ensure that every student feels valued, supported and able to thrive.
Operations Leadership
Operations Leadership enables students to contribute to the day-to-day life and successful running of the school.
Students may become Communications Officers, helping to promote school events, celebrate student achievements and share important information with the wider school community. Through these roles, students develop valuable skills in organisation, teamwork, creativity and digital communication.
In the Sixth Form, students may be appointed as Communications Presidents. Working alongside staff and student leaders, they take a leading role in promoting school events, celebrating success and ensuring that the achievements, opportunities and experiences of students are shared across the school community.
Through these opportunities, students develop leadership, communication and project management skills while making a significant contribution to the life of the school.
Leadership Through Service
A common principle underpins every leadership role at Drayton Manor: service.
Whether representing their peers through student voice, leading within the House System, championing learning and scholarship, promoting wellbeing or supporting the wider life of the school, our student leaders are encouraged to use their talents to make a positive difference to the lives of others.
Through these opportunities, students learn that leadership is not about position or status, but about responsibility, contribution and the willingness to serve their community.
Developing Future Leaders
Our student leadership programme prepares students not only for success at school but also for active citizenship beyond it.
Through meaningful leadership experiences, students develop the confidence, character and sense of responsibility needed to make a positive contribution to their future education, workplaces and communities.
At Drayton Manor, we want every student to leave knowing that leadership is not reserved for a few individuals. It is an opportunity open to everyone who is willing to serve, contribute and make a difference.
