School Transition

TRANSITION FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL TO DRAYTON MANOR HIGH SCHOOL

Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone, and we are committed to making the move from Year 6 to Year 7 as smooth, supportive, and enjoyable as possible. Drayton Manor offers a comprehensive transition programme designed to help students feel confident, settled, and fully prepared for life at our school before September even begins. 

PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS

During the summer term, teachers and students from Drayton Manor visit many of our main feeder primary schools to speak directly with the students and run a transition workshop. This provides familiar and friendly faces, gives students a chance to ask questions about their new school, and helps ease any worries they might have about the upcoming move. 

YEAR 6 INDUCTION DAY

At the end of June, we host an Induction Day where incoming students visit the school for the day. During the day, students participate in a variety of taster lessons, from Science to English to Modern Foreign Languages. They also spend valuable time getting to know our staff and the school site.  

SUMMER SCHOOL

To build even more familiarity and confidence, we run a two-day summer school during the last week of August. During these two days, students participate in team-building activities and learn more about everyday school life, helping them forge new friendships and feel confident at school before the autumn term begins. 

THE FIRST DAY OF YEAR 7

On the first day of the new term, Year 7 students spend their time exclusively with their tutors and the year team. This dedicated time is used to explore how the school works, learn about important information and expectations, and ensure every student feels fully supported as they begin their secondary education. 

NEW YEAR 7 PARENTS' EVENING

Drayton Manor High School is committed to working closely with families and we host a New Year 7 Parents' Evening early in September. Parents and carers are invited into the school to hear directly from the Headteacher, take a guided tour of the facilities, and meet their child’s tutors to establish a strong partnership for the years ahead.

CONTINUED SUPPORT

The support from the Transition Team continues into Year 7 with dedicated members of staff working closely with the Year Team to support every child in Year 7. Events are organised for the Year Group, such as a treasure hunt and inter-tutor sporting competitions. There are also small group and individual support available to help any students for whom the transition to secondary school may prove to be more challenging.
